According to a study conducted by FedEx, 68 percent of customers will buy a product if their sign caught their eye.

In a world where there are so many businesses all trying to get you to spend money with them instead of with a competitor, it is crucial to have a sign that stands out.

Standing out could mean the difference between gaining market share and scrambling to find other ways to attract customers (which is easier said than done.)

When it comes to your business, you shouldn’t have to fight with competitors over market share, keep reading this guide on how to design a sign to make you stand out amongst the crowd.

Knowing Your Audience (And Yourself)

When it comes to designing a sign, it is very important to know your audience and what will stand out to them. For example, if you own a flower shop, you will want a soft design that will put people at ease and know what your business is selling. You wouldn’t want to put up a sign with anything too extreme that might deter potential customers.

There are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you understand what your business is all about and what message you are trying to portray:

  1. What is your core message?
  2. What is the goal of your sign?
  3. Who is your target audience?

After determining an answer for each of these questions, you will be ready to move on to the physical design of your sign. These questions will also give you important banner ideas.

Its Time to Design A Sign

There are a few things to keep in mind while designing a sign for your business.

  • Color is very important and should resonate with your audience.
  • Contrast is just as important, providing easy readability.
  • You should also consider the size and font of the text.

Color

According to a study conducted by the University of Loyola, “Color increases brand recognition by up to 80%.” This study stresses the importance of choosing the right color for your sign, a color that will stand out to your audience and resonate with them.

A great example of how color can resonate with your target market is Apple. They released a colorful iMac that consumers fell in love with. Going against the industry standard of being basic and beige. Now we have colorful iPhones.

Contrast

Contrast is just as important when it comes to the readability of your sign. When deciding on colors to use in the background, it is important to keep in mind how much your text will stand out.

Choosing like colors in the forefront and background is never a good idea unless you are designing camouflage. It is recommended to use either light colors in the forefront and dark colors in the background or vice versa. Adding a color stroke (border) around your text will make the text “pop” or stand out better.

Size and Font

Both the size and font of your text are important when it comes to readability especially from a distance.

A nice fancy font may seem like a good idea but when it comes to reading from a distance, basic fonts like Ariel are usually a good choice.

Size also matters, determining how far away you would like your sign to be read can be a good place to start when determining what size to choose.
