Having a love for the great outdoors makes you a member of a large yet unique tribe of people. It’s a hobby suited to families and the friends they make on the trail. It’s a way of living that is full of lasting memories, laughs, and probably some scrapes and bruises too.

People share their many adventures with friends and strangers in outdoor stores across the country just before hitting the trail for more adventure. If you’re starting an outdoor store, then you want your store the place where people in your area tell their stories and prepare for more daring exploits. You have a lot of business to handle before you can fulfill that goal, so continue reading to learn what you need to do to open your outdoor store.

Secure Your Business’s Location And Status

It would be nice if you could lease a building and open your doors for business all in one motion, but it only works like that in Hollywood. To run any business, you have to get your affairs with your state’s government in order.

The first thing you have to do is to register your business. When you register your business, it’s kind of like getting a birth certificate for your business. Your registration makes it official that your business exists. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to find a location.

Picking a location for a business is one of the most strategic moves you have to make in starting your business. Considering that you’re opening an outdoor store, you may want to put your store in a place that people will stop in on their way to fish or hunt. If you plan to sell more expensive items like firearms, ATVs, and kayaks, then you may find that a high-traffic area is more suitable for your store.

Once you have a location for your business, it’s time to get a license to run it. The easiest way to go about doing this is by forming an LLC. If you’re just now starting your business, then it’s more than likely only you or you and some close associates. Forming an LLC means that your business won’t pay federal taxes, but each member of the LLC will pay out of their income. That’s a huge benefit to small and fledgling companies.

Build A Customer Service Infrastructure

The most crucial element of a successful business is the people who work for it. To give your business a solid foundation, it takes reliable staff. When looking for candidates, seek out people who have a genuine interest in outdoor activities and will be able to provide knowledgeable assistance.

As you gain experience running your outdoor store, you will notice that people have a lot of questions. Even though they can get a lot of their answers on the internet, most people prefer the assistance of another person over the phone. It’s even better if when they reach out to your company for help, you already know who they are, what they’ve purchased, and possible reasons for their call. A lot of small companies use call center software for CRMs to give them that necessary competitive edge in their customer service. It’s inexpensive, and the vendor manages the software—so it’s hands-off for you and your staff.

Find Suppliers

Once you have your location and license, your next concern is securing suppliers. You have to take into consideration factors such as cost, dependability, and the types of products you want to sell. Are you going to be a niche store that focuses on hunting and shooting? If so, then you need to find suppliers with particular items like hunting stands, AR-15 tools, and sniper rifle accessories at the best cost. A supplier who offers a little bit of everything will be more expensive when it comes to their niche items, so be selective.

Create The Right Atmosphere

When you have all of the details of your business in place, it’s time to get your store ready for the general public. Remember, you’re not just decorating and stocking a store—you’re building an experience for your customers. Create an atmosphere that resembles all there is to love about being out in the wilderness and bring it into your outdoor retail store.

What lovers of the great outdoors cherish most about it are the memories they create with nature and their loved ones. While you may have to spend more of your time in your store than adventuring, you’ll still get to hear about all of those great memories.
