“Responding to a “700 Club” viewer, whose married gay son hopes to adopt a child, right-wing televangelist Pat Robertson argued that same-couples “have tried to destroy marriage.” According to a report from Right Wing Watch, Robertson said: “If you sincerely feel, as I do, that this is wrong – it’s violating the scripture – then they need to know it. Marriage is between a man and a woman and they’ve now brought cases to the Supreme Court saying, well, the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and so forth.”
“He then added, “You better get on your knees and pray and let the Lord take care of it because there isn’t a whole lot else you can do.” In recent months, Roberson has spoken against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community several times, advising parents to skip the same-sex wedding of their child on one broadcast and telling a mother that she should treat her son, who just came out of the closet, like a drug addict.
“He also lashed out at a Washington state judge’s ruling that a florist’s refusal to provide flowers for a gay couple’s wedding had violated local anti-discrimination laws. Claiming that florists and other wedding-related businesses might soon be required to cater to weddings between a man and a dog, he added, “What if there’s a polygamous situation where a guy has five wives and he wants to have five ceremonies and she’s going to be forced by the law to provide them flowers?”
Speaking exclusively to Newslo, Robertson said that his TV station is “on a mission to protect America and all of its people from the evils of fornication, same-sex marriage and all other unholy deviances people are troubled by.”
“How do people not see what I am trying so hard to do? Is the Devil’s hold over them so powerful that they do not see what they have become?,” Robertson asked. “Let me be honest – I do not hate the members of the LGBT community just as one would be wrong to hate a sick person. You don’t choose an illness; it works the other way around. I am merely being hard in my words in actions because I am trying to help them get better and preserve what little normal Americans are left. It’s about time they realized that.”
