Orlando, Fla. – Hours after being taken into custody for reportedly threatening his wife and her father with a gun, George Zimmerman has been found guilty of domestic battery.
Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell said Shellie Zimmerman called police shortly after 2 p.m. Monday claiming that her husband made threats with his hand on his gun and assaulted her father, which was all the evidence authorities needed to put George Zimmerman away for a long time.
Shellie Zimmerman filed for divorce last week, claiming she and her husband separated a month after Zimmerman was acquitted of any crime for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin last July.
Initial reports from the Lake Mary Police Department stated that the investigation was ongoing and no arrest had been made, but once it was confirmed that Zimmerman’s victims were white they had to act quickly.
“Because of a previous incident involving Mr. Zimmerman, we first had to rule out the possibility that Mr. Zimmerman was merely protecting his family from black teenagers,” said Bracknell.
Zimmerman was able to remain free for 40 days after shooting and killing Martin, but authorities maintained that the Martin case was different. “This was a cut and dry case of a white woman being threatened, and a white man being assaulted,” stated a Lake Mary Police spokesman. “There was no time to examine facts or evidence. Mr. Zimmerman had to be arrested before he could further harm more white people.”
