Zelenskyy Set to Meet Trump at White House

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, in a high-profile discussion expected to cover military aid, energy security, and ongoing sanctions on Russia. The visit was confirmed by Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Olga Stefanishyna, and embassy spokesperson Halyna Yusypiuk, highlighting the growing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

The meeting comes amid Trump’s recent remarks suggesting the U.S. might provide Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, a move that could allow Kyiv to strike inside Russian territory. Speaking on Air Force One, Trump said, “We may not, but we may do it. I think it’s appropriate to bring up — yeah, I want to. I want to see the war settled.” He noted that he had discussed the potential missile supply with Zelenskyy over the weekend, though no final decision has been made.

Russia has strongly objected to the idea. President Vladimir Putin warned that supplying Tomahawks would represent “a qualitatively new stage of escalation,” while Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current official, added that the move “could end badly for everyone, and first and foremost, for Trump himself.”

Zelenskyy’s delegation for the White House visit includes Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and top national security official Rustem Umerov. Andriy Yermak, head of Zelenskyy’s office, said the discussions will focus on “strengthen[ing] Ukraine’s defense, secur[ing] our energy resilience, and intensify[ing] sanctions pressure on the aggressor.”

The visit follows Trump’s trip to the Middle East, where he was credited with facilitating a deal that led to Hamas releasing remaining hostages and Israel freeing Palestinian prisoners. This diplomatic backdrop adds weight to the Ukraine visit, as both sides aim to coordinate international pressure on Russia and bolster Ukraine’s security.

Last month, First Lady Melania Trump reportedly sent a letter to Putin regarding the welfare of Ukrainian children believed to have been taken to Russia, emphasizing the need to protect their “innocence.”

Trump has previously suggested he could end the war in Ukraine quickly, even claiming it could be done within 24 hours. However, he later acknowledged the complexity of the conflict, noting that Putin “let me down” in achieving a swift resolution during his first months in office.

While Zelenskyy last visited the White House in mid-August, this week’s meeting comes amid heightened discussions of military support and strategic coordination, including potential new U.S. weapons deliveries. Analysts note that any decision on Tomahawk missiles would mark a significant escalation in U.S. support for Ukraine and could reshape the dynamics of the conflict with Russia.
