The assassination of Charlie Kirk, conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, continues to shake the United States as investigators dig deeper into the case and the alleged shooter prepares for his first court appearance.

The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is being held without bail in the Utah County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm. Authorities confirmed he is under special watch pending a mental health evaluation.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson is not cooperating with investigators but revealed that early findings point to his immersion in online gaming communities and darker corners of the internet. “Clearly, there was a lot of gaming going on, friends that have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, Reddit culture and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep,” Cox said. He noted that bullet casings found at the scene carried engravings tied to memes and video games, including references to Helldivers 2. Cox also suggested investigators are reviewing whether Robinson’s romantic relationship with his transitioning roommate may have been a factor. He stressed the partner had been “incredibly cooperative” and had no knowledge of the plan.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed investigators recovered a message in which Robinson wrote that he had the “opportunity to take out Kirk and I’m going to take it.” Patel described it as both a note and a text message exchange that had been deleted but was later retrieved. Patel also said DNA evidence from a screwdriver and towel matched Robinson and tied him to the murder weapon. Robinson’s family told authorities he had “subscribed to left-wing ideology,” though Patel did not elaborate further.

According to the Washington Post, Robinson confessed in an online Discord chat shortly after the killing, writing “bad news … me at UVU yesterday” and thanking fellow users for “all the good times and laughs.” Hours later, before surrendering, he reportedly added, “some hatred cannot be negotiated with.”

Kirk’s death has triggered growing alarm in Washington, where lawmakers across party lines voiced concern about escalating political violence. Sen. Mark Kelly, whose wife Gabby Giffords survived a shooting in 2011, warned, “Whether you’re a governor or senator, a member of the House, president of the United States, you have to be very careful about your words because people are listening.” Republican Sen. John Curtis echoed the point, saying, “Radical coming from any direction is not good, it’s not healthy and it should be called out.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he has been speaking with lawmakers worried about their personal security. “I’ve been talking with a lot of them over the last few days … to assure them that we will make certain that everyone has a level of security that’s necessary,” he said. Johnson later joined fellow Republicans and Trump administration officials at a vigil for Kirk at the Kennedy Center, praising the activist as someone who “loved the vigorous debate, but he loved people more.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Kirk a champion of conservative and Christian values, adding, “President Trump loved you, Charlie, so much too.” Trump announced he plans to speak at Kirk’s funeral in Phoenix and once again blamed the “radical left” for the killing. “He’s a left,” Trump said of Robinson. “A lot of problems with the left, and they get protected, and they shouldn’t be protected.”

The president also said he was weighing the possibility of designating Antifa and other left-wing groups as domestic terrorist organizations. He added that he had been discussing potential racketeering charges with Attorney General Pam Bondi. Vice President JD Vance, stepping in to host The Charlie Kirk Show, argued that “something has gone very wrong with a lunatic fringe, a minority, but a growing and powerful minority on the far left.” Senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller promised an intensified crackdown on leftist “terror” networks accused of fueling online harassment.

Authorities, meanwhile, continue to search for answers. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown has not ruled out seeking the death penalty, saying “everything is on the table.” With multiple electronic devices seized from Robinson’s home and hours of online activity under review, the investigation is expected to take weeks.

For many, Kirk’s assassination is not only a devastating personal loss but also a grim reminder of the nation’s deepening divisions. As Patel put it, the case now involves “scores of interviews” and countless questions about how a 22-year-old came to target one of the most prominent conservative voices in America.
